Michaela Büsse AREIA À FLOR DA PELE Ensaio Como uma lixa sobre o planeta em carne viva, a extração, transformação e comercialização de areia está a erodir a superfície terrestre. Fundamental na produção de betão, vidro, aço, componentes informáticos e tecnologias digitais, a areia é o segundo material mais utilizado no mundo, apenas ultrapassado pela água. A investigadora Michaela Büsse revela o complexo problema que se esconde mesmo debaixo dos nossos pés: "Enquanto alicerce das infraestruturas urbanas, a areia está incorporada no próprio tecido da vida moderna. No entanto, a sua ubiquidade esconde a sua complexidade. Enquanto sedimento, a areia é fundamental para o funcionamento dos ecossistemas. A expansão e intensificação incessantes das cidades estão a privar os rios e as costas de sedimentos, esgotando a areia a um ritmo que excede largamente a sua capacidade natural de reposição." Essential to the production of concrete, glass, steel, electronics, and digital technologies, sand is the second most consumed material in the world — surpassed only by water. Researcher Michaela Büsse unveils the complex issue hiding right beneath our feet: "As the bedrock of urban infrastructures, sand is embedded in the very fabric of modern life. Yet, its ubiquity belies its complexity. As a sediment, sand is foundational for the functioning of ecosystems. The relentless expansion and intensification of cities is starving rivers and coasts of sediment, depleting sand at a rate that far exceeds its natural replenishment." KEEP READING
