SYNOPSIS 1787. Lisbon. Two men from different worlds meet and fall in love. Willam Beckford and Gregório Franchi. We see them at work and at play in Portugal and later in England while Beckford's great Gothic revival masterpiece, Fonthill Abbey, rises and falls. The play follows their enduring relationship from their meeting on the steps of the Church of São Vicente - Franchi a young musician at Lisbon's Patriarchal church, Beckford a rich and multi-talented young Englishman - to their later lives, taking in the gay bordellos of London and the drab respectability of Bath.
